As cannabis becomes more accessible in Massachusetts, knowing how to legally store, travel with, and consume your products is essential, especially for those gearing up for summer weekends, road trips, or simply staying compliant at home.

Whether you're a longtime consumer or someone preparing for their first delivery with ON ROOT (coming soon to the Northshore), this guide breaks down the current cannabis laws in Massachusetts for 2025, with a special focus on storage, transportation, and public use.

Cannabis Possession Limits in Massachusetts (2025)

In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, adults 21 and over may legally possess:

  • Up to 1 ounce (28 grams) of cannabis on their person in public
  • Up to 10 ounces at home

However, once you have more than 1 ounce at home, the law requires you to store it in a locked or secured container, out of reach from minors and guests.

Important Notes:

  • Medical patients are subject to separate limits based on their doctor’s recommendation
  • Gifting small amounts to other adults 21+ is legal as long as no payment or barter is involved

How to Legally Store Cannabis at Home

Massachusetts law takes safe storage seriously, especially when it comes to households with children, roommates, or shared spaces.

Key Storage Rules:

  • Cannabis exceeding 1 ounce must be kept in a locked container, such as a lockbox, safe, or lockable drawer
  • The storage method must be reasonably secure and not easily accessible to minors
  • For cannabis-infused products like edibles, childproof packaging is required when not in use

Apartment Dwellers & Renters:

  • Your landlord may legally restrict cannabis use and storage in your lease agreement, even though it’s legal in the state
  • Always check your lease and building policy before storing large amounts or consuming on-site

Traveling with Cannabis in Massachusetts

In Your Vehicle:
Cannabis can be transported in a personal vehicle, but it must be:

  • Stored in a sealed container
  • Placed in the trunk or a locked glove box
  • Not consumed by the driver or passengers

Failure to follow this guidance is treated similarly to an open container violation for alcohol and can result in fines.

Public Transit, Uber, or Rideshare:

  • You may carry cannabis on public transportation if it is sealed and odor-free, but this is discouraged due to inconsistent policies
  • In Ubers or Lyfts, the same rules apply: sealed, discreet, and not consumed in the vehicle

Crossing State Lines: Do Not Attempt It
Even if the neighboring state has legalized cannabis, it is federally illegal to cross state borders with cannabis products. This applies to both recreational and medical users.

Public Use and Where You Can Legally Consume

Despite legalization, public consumption remains illegal across Massachusetts. That means:

  • You cannot smoke, vape, or ingest cannabis on sidewalks, beaches, parks, or in any public space
  • You may consume cannabis on private property with the owner’s permission

This includes:

  • Your home or backyard
  • Private residences of friends (if allowed)
  • Designated cannabis-friendly private events, though these are still rare and not widespread in MA

Fines for public consumption range from $100 to $300 depending on the municipality. Lynn, for example, enforces public use bans under city ordinance.

Tips for Staying Compliant in Lynn and the North Shore

  • Store smart. Use airtight, odor-proof, locked containers for long-term storage at home
  • Be discreet when traveling. Always keep products sealed and avoid consumption until you’re at your destination
  • Know your town’s policies. Some municipalities impose additional restrictions. Lynn does not currently allow public consumption and enforces this via local ordinance
  • Don’t leave products visible in your car. Even legal cannabis left in plain sight can lead to unnecessary legal scrutiny or theft
